As a member of Civic Thread’s Board, you’ll help guide the strategic direction of an organization working alongside communities to advance health equity, mobility justice, and community-centered planning throughout the Sacramento region.

How Board Members Make an Impact

Civic Thread’s Board plays a vital role in advancing our mission and strengthening our impact throughout the Sacramento region. Our Board members are strategic advisors, community ambassadors, and champions for active transportation, community-based planning, health equity, and community empowerment.

Working in partnership with the Executive Director, the Board provides organizational oversight, financial stewardship, and strategic direction while supporting the organization’s long-term sustainability and growth. While day-to-day operations are led by Civic Thread staff, the Board helps ensure the organization remains mission-focused, financially sound, and responsive to the communities we serve.

As a board member, you’ll contribute your expertise, perspectives, and leadership to help shape Civic Thread’s future, strengthen community partnerships, and advance initiatives that create healthier, safer, and more connected communities.

Board Member Responsibilities and expectations

Board members are expected to contribute their time, expertise, perspectives and connections in support of Civic Thread and our mission. We value board members who are collaborative, curious and committed to strengthening both the organization and the communities we serve.

  • Commit to a minimum two-year term, actively participate in quarterly board meetings (4 per year) and semi-annual or annual board retreats
  • Regularly contribute to at least one quarterly committee
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to Civic Thread’s mission, values, and goals
  • Work with the Executive Director to identify opportunities to strengthen the organization and board
  • Time commitment: Approximately 5-8 hours per quarter for board and committee meetings and prep, plus occasional participation in planning and attending board retreats, fundraising events, team holiday gatherings, and attending community-facing events throughout the year.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow board members and organizational and community partners to strengthen Civic Thread’s mission and objectives
  • Review meeting materials in advance and come prepared to provide thoughtful input and participate in Board discussions and decisions
  • Be familiar with and uphold the organization’s bylaws
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding the organization’s business affairs, negotiations, legal matters, and sensitive information related to Board members, staff, clients, and partners.
  • Review, approve and monitor Civic Thread’s annual budget
  • Develop and support strategies to diversify Civic Thread’s revenue
  • Connect Civic Thread with prospective donors, funders, sponsors, and other resources
  • Participate in Civic Thread’s annual $1,500 “Give or Get” commitment through personal giving and/or fundraising to support the organization’s mission and long-term sustainability
  • Help expand Civic Thread’s network of like-minded individuals and organizations working to advance health equity in the built environment
  • Share professional and organizational expertise and encourage collaborations and links between other coalitions and associations
  • Connect professional and community contacts with the Executive Director, when appropriate
  • Be an advocate and spokesperson for Civic Thread within your professional networks and community
  • Support Civic Thread events through attendance, sponsorship outreach, promotion and other forms of participation

We welcome applicants who are committed to our mission and bring knowledge, experience, or expertise in areas such as public policy, public health, transportation, community-based planning, community engagement, or related fields. We are also particularly interested in candidates whose professional backgrounds can strengthen the Board in areas such as law, human resources, finance and accounting, fundraising and philanthropy, marketing and communications, and organizational leadership.

Just as important as professional experience is a willingness to show up, contribute, and get involved. We value Board members who are ready to share their perspectives, expertise, connections, and ideas to help strengthen Civic Thread and advance our mission.
