Project Timeline
2012 – June 2021
The West Sacramento Safe and Healthy Routes to School program is a multi-year Caltrans funded Safe Routes to School program that operates at all public K-8 schools in West Sacramento. The first phase of the program ran from 2012 through the 2014/15 school year. A second 2-year phase began in 2017 and will ran through the end of the 2018/19 school year. The program is administered by the City of West Sacramento in partnership with the Washington Unified School District and implemented by WALKSacramento. The second phase of the program also involved programs by the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates that expand traditional Safe Routes to School approaches into the West Sacramento community.
Following the conclusion of Caltrans funding, the City of West Sacramento received a TDM grant from the Sacramento Area Council of Governments to expand Safe Routes to School programming to charter, private, and high schools in West Sacramento. Between Fall 2019 – Spring 2021, WALKSacramento and the City of West Sacramento continued Safe Routes to School work and identified new opportunities to implement carpooling programs and high school leadership programs.
