Project Timeline

February 2025 – December 2026

Civic Thread is supporting Sacramento City Unified School District’s (SCUSD) Safe Routes to School for All project in South Sacramento. The project helps up to thirteen schools where students face transportation challenges. It focuses on getting students to school safely and easily, with solutions shaped by families, students, and school communities.

As part of this project, Civic Thread leads the Community Transportation Needs Assessment and convenes school champions. The assessment listens to community members to understand transportation challenges, priorities, and possible solutions. Findings from the assessment will guide decisions to improve safety and access in neighborhoods facing the most transportation challenges.

Civic Thread has partnered with South Sacramento schools and communities on Safe Routes to School since 2017. This work includes leading school events, providing education, and leading transportation audits. These efforts improved safety and access near Fern Bacon Middle School and Oak Ridge Elementary School. Civic Thread also led Safe Routes to School programming in South Sacramento during the 2024–2025 school year.

This long‑standing work helped lead to the Safe Routes to School for All project. Civic Thread is building on past experience and strong community relationships to provide technical support. This support helps schools and communities lead planning, engagement, and capacity building as part of the project.

Community Health & Active Mobility Partners of Sacramento (CHAMPS) Advisory Committee

To support the project, Civic Thread is bringing together community representatives, student interns, school staff, and parents to guide the engagement processes and Needs Assessment.  The CHAMPS Advisory Committee members are paid for their time. They collaborate closely with the project team to help guide project decisions and engage with hard-to-reach community members. The committee will also make sure that community needs and priorities are front and center.
